| B-Roll Footage | Supplemental footage used to intercut with the main sequence. Often used in an interview or documentary. |
| Bezier | A curved pathway, used in Premiere Pro to add gradual transitions between keyframes. |
| Capture Panel | A workspace option which allows users to record video from a tape-based medium into Premiere Pro. |
| Chroma Key | A Premiere Pro effect used in postproduction to compose two video streams together based on color hues. |
| Compositing | The ability in Adobe Premiere to layer multiple videos on top of one another. |
| Copyright | The legally recognized right to exclusive control over a production. |
| Crawling Title | An Adobe Premiere effect which animates text to move from the right side of the screen to the left or vice versa. |
| Cross Dissolve | An Adobe Premiere effect which animates text or graphics to gradually dissappear. |
| Dailies | Footage from the daily shoot. Editing is begun before the production is done so that any mistakes can be caught early on. Sometimes referred to as rushes. |
| Deadlines | Important dates for delivery on completion. |
| Deliverables | Quantifiable goods or services that will be provided upon the completion of a project. |
| Demographics | The characteristics of human populations used to determine a consumer market. |
| Derivative Works | A work with another’s work recut, remixed, or altered in some original way. |
| Director's Cut | The editing of the movie done under the supervision of the director. This cut is sometimes longer than the final production. |
| Edit | The process of removing unnecessary or inappropriate words, sounds, or scenes from video and audio clips. |
| Export | The act of sending or transferring a saved file to another application. |
| Extract | An editing option which removes a selected clip and then closes the gap that was created by removing the clip. |
| Fair Use Doctrine | A ruling which defines the conditions under which materials that are under copyright can be used without having to pay royalties. |
| Feedback | The critique given by a peer about a product, project, or system. |
| Final Cut | The last cut as overseen by the producer. Usually more concise and done for marketablility. |
| Frame | A structured sequence of bits as defined by a networking standard or specification. |
| Garbage Matte | A Premiere Pro effect used to create a composite from multiple images which gives the ability to make portions of the clips transparent so upper or lower layers will show through. |
| Import | The process used to bring video and audio files from one location on a computer into Premiere Pro. |
| Intellectual Property | An intellectual product which has monetary and commercial value and which includes copyrighted materials. |
| Interpolation | The estimation of a value, in color of pixels, between two known values. Interpolation is used when changing the resolution of an image. |
| Keyframe | A frame within a clip by which animation and other attributes, such as motion tweening, may be anchored. |
| Lift | An editing option which removes a selected clip from the timeline, leaving a hole in the timeline. |
| Log | The process used to keep track of different clips, notes about the clip, and director comments. |
| Lower Third | The section of a sequence used to place titles or subtitles. If a screen is divided into thirds this is the bottom section. |
| Metadata | Data describing the video, making the video searchable via the Internet. |
| Nesting | The act of placing one animated object within another animated object. |
| Opacity | A value that determines how transparent the paint will appear on an image. The lower the value, the more transparent the paint will be. May also refer to the transparency of a layer, mask, or gradient. |
| Panels | The workspace options which allow users to modify, trim, add effects, and edit the clips into a cohesive and aesthetic production. |
| Picture Lock | The time when all the editing is finalized and the finished product is ready to be sent to the post house for effects and have the soundtrack added. |
| Picture-in-Picture | An effect which allows the user to place a media file in a smaller frame onto a larger media file, so both media files may be viewed at the same time. |
| Preferences | The ablity given by Premiere Pro which allows users to customize the workspace to fit the given needs. |
| Premise | A one-sentence to three-sentence pitch or description of what the production is about. |
| Production | The process of organizing a film for presentation. |
| Project Genre | A classification or style of video. |
| Project Panel | A workspace option which allows users to view all the clips in Icon view or List view. A user can also organize all the clips so they are more easily accessable. Some editing can also be done in the Project panel. |
| Render | A method to preview sections of a video production in its final form before it is exported. |
| Ripple Edit | A Premiere Pro effect which automatically moves edited clips forward or backward in the Timeline in relation to an inserted or deleted clip. |
| Rolling Title | An Adobe Premiere effect which animates text to roll from the bottom of the screen to the top of the screen. |
| Rough Cut | The first full edit of the production of a film after the initial editing is completed. |
| Rule of Thirds | A video production rule that divides the frame into nine equal areas. |
| Scope | Description of how narrowly tailored a project might be in regard to the audience. Includes all aspects of a project based on client goals to deliver a project. |
| Script | The blueprint of a production. |
| Scrub | A method of quickly reviewing footage in Icon view by using the mouse to hover over the clip. |
| Sequence | An area used to lay out clips for a story in sequential order. |
| Shot | A film sequence photographed continuously by one camera. |
| Source Monitor | An editing option within Premiere which allows users to make various changes to the timeline. |
| Spatial Interpolation | An estimation of audio and video values which fills in the gaps left by editing clips within Premiere Pro. |
| Storyboard | A graphic organizer used to previsualize a production. |
| Three Act Structure | A format which includes the introduction, middle, and conclusion. |
| Thumbnails | A view option that uses a small image of the contents of a file. Thumbnails provide a quick viewing of the file for easy browsing without having to actually open the file. |
| Time Ruler | A row along the top of the timeline showing the timecode of the production. |
| Timecode | A Premiere Pro option which marks specific frames with the time which will make capturing easier. |
| Timeline | A panel in Premiere Pro where clips are placed to create a video. |
| Transitions | Various options used to change from one shot to another. |
| Treatment | An approximately one-page write-up of what will happen in the production. |
| Trim | A process in which various tools or In and Out options are used to shorten a clip to better fit the needs of the video. |
| Trim Monitor | A monitor within the Premiere Pro workspace used to edit clips for the timeline. |
| Volume Unit | A method used to measure perceived volume changes in audio. |
| Warp Stabilizer | A Premiere Pro effect which will stabilize motions caused by shaky filming. |
| Work Area Bar | A resizeable area near the Timeline ruler that allows a user to specify a clip to be rendered. |
| Workspace | The working interface of Premiere Pro which contains the monitors and panels necessary to edit and work with video files. |
