Basic Windows Terminology

This activity will review basic Windows terminology.

DesktopThe overall work area on the screen
IconA small picture representing a feature or application
TaskbarThe gray bar at the bottom of the desktop used to display the Start Button and to switch between currently running applications
Start ButtonThe place to click to view the Start Menu
MouseAn input device that allows you to select files, access tools, and grab folders
Mouse PointerA graphical element you move around the screen to select items
ClickingPressing and releasing the left mouse button
Double ClickingClicking the left mouse button twice in rapid succession
DraggingMoving objects with the mouse; Pressing the mouse button and moving the mouse in the desired direction
Right ClickingPressing and releasing the right mouse button
SelectingPointing to an item and clicking the mouse button
MultitaskingProcessing information in more than one application at the same time
WindowAn on-screen area in which you view program folders, files, or icons
Title BarThe bar at the top of the window displaying the name of the application running in the window
Menu BarA bar which lists available menus
ToolbarA bar containing buttons that access various functions and commands
Address BarThe bar displaying the name of the open folder or object
Minimize ButtonThis button reduces the window to a button on the taskbar
Maximize ButtonThis button enlarges the window to fill the screen
Restore ButtonThis button enables you to restore the window to its previous (smaller) size
Status BarThis bar provide information on the currently selected object or task being performed
Close ButtonThis button resembles an "x" and quickly closes the window
Resize TabThis provides a large spot to grab when you want to resize a window
Scroll BarsThese bars are displayed when a window is not large enough to display everything in one window
MenuA list of options or choices
Active WindowThe window you are working with; this window has a title bar with a more intense color
EllipsisThese dots tell you that choosing this option will display a dialog box
Cascade Windows OptionThe open windows are arranged in a stack with title bars showing
Tile Windows HorizontallyThe open windows are arranged across the desktop from top to bottom, without overlapping any portion of the window
Tile Windows VerticallyThe open windows are arranged evenly across the screen, left to right, without overlapping any window
