Systolic | Pressure on the heart when the heart is contracting, normal rate is 120. |
Diastolic | Pressure on the heart when the heart is at rest, normal rate is 80. |
Hypertension | Due to build up of plaque, you end up with high blood pressure. |
Sphygmomanometer | This is used to measure your blood pressure. This is done by squeezing a large artery in you upper arm and then listening for the first pulse (systolic) and then waiting for when the pulse stops (diastolic). |
Pre-hypertension | When your systolic reading is between 120-139 or your diastolic reading is between 81-89. |
Cholesterol | A type of fat found in your blood that is used to help in the function or growth of the brain, skin and organs. |
LDL (low-density lipoprotein) | This is the cause of plaque build up, which then can clog you arteries. Is referred to as "bad cholesterol". |
HDL (high-density lipoprotein) | This removes cholesterol from the arteries and carries the cholesterol back to the liver where it can be processed and sent back to the body to help in the function and growth of the brain, skin and organs. Referred to as the "good cholesterol". |
