| plot | the sequence of events in a story, connected by cause and effect |
| irony | can be situational, dramatic, or verbal, but always involves either the unexpected or a double level of meaning |
| allusion | a reference to a well-known literary work, person, place, event, or work of art, sure to be familiar to most readers |
| conflict | a struggle between opposing forces, either within a character or between the character and some outside force |
| exposition | background information about situation and setting, usually woven in at the beginning of a story |
| climax | the moment of highest intensity in a story and, most importnatly, the moment that decides how the conflice turns out |
| narrator | the teller of the story |
| resolution | how the conflict turns out, how the story ends |
