Sleep Imaging Terminology

Familiarizing yourself with the Sleep Imaging terminology will allow faster navigation through the Sleep Guidelines

AB
HST“Home Sleep Testing”. Unattended sleep study done in patient’s home. Varying number of parameters monitored.
PSG“Polysomnography” or facility sleep study. Varying number of parameters monitored.
AHI“Apnea-Hypopnea Index”. Number of pauses in breathing per hour of sleep.
Central Sleep ApneaDisorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. It occurs because the brain does not send proper signals to the muscles that control breathing. This condition is different from OSA, in which one cannot breathe because of upper airway obstruction.
Complex Sleep ApneaComplex sleep apnea is a disorder in which repeated central sleep apneas persist or emerge when obstructive events are stopped using PAP.
APAPAPAP has two settings, a low range setting and a high range setting. The machine will fluctuate through the night as it automatically adjusts to suit the particular needs of the client. APAP machines use algorithms that sense subtle changes in breathing and adjust itself to the best pressure setting at any time in the night.
BiPAPBi-level or two level positive airway pressure. Delivers an inhale pressure and an exhale pressure.
CPAPCPAP delivers a continuous, steady stream of pressurized air that keeps airways from collapsing and causing apnea events.
Adaptive Servo Ventilation PAPThis machine provides respiratory support for central, mixed, or even severe obstructive sleep apnea. It detects the breathing pattern of the patient on a breath-by-breath basis and assesses the average ventilation in order to adjust to a target ventilation best fitted to the breathing cycle of the patient.
95810Full night facility sleep study
95811Split night facility sleep study including both diagnostic study and then subsequent PAP titration. Also used as PAP titration alone.
95805Also known as Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT) or maintenance of wakefulness testing. Used for diagnosis of narcolepsy.
95807Also known as PAP Nap-Considered investigational and experimental. Request must be forwarded to MD Review.
95808Requests must be forwarded to MD Review.
95782PEDIATRIC Code (younger than 6 years old): Full night facility sleep study
95873PEDIATRIC Code (younger than 6 years old): Split night facility sleep study including both diagnostic study and then subsequent PAP titration. Also used as PAP titration alone.
Hypoglossal Nerve StimulatorA surgically implanted device that delivers stimulating elevtrical pulses to the hypoglossa nerve, which controls upper airway musculature.
REM Behavior DisorderREM Behavior Disorder is characterized by the acting out of dreams that are vivid, intense, and violent.
PLMDPeriodic Limb Movement Disorder (PLMD) is defined by periodic episodes of repetitive limb movements that cause arousals from sleep and is not related to Restless Leg syndrome (RLS occurs in the evening before sleep). A diagnosis of PLMD is characterized by at least 5 Periodic limb movements related to arousals per hour.
Narcolepsya sleep disorder characterized by excessive sleepiness, sleep paralysis, hallucinations, and in some cases episodes of cataplexy (partial or total loss of muscle control, often triggered by a strong emotion such as laughter).
