AB
What position did Jefferson hold in the new government?Secretary of State - the expert on foreign nations
What party was Thomas Jefferson from?Anti-federalist
What did Anti-federalist believe in relation to the federal government? They were very worried that an overly powerful national government could abuse the people's rights.
What position did Alexander Hamilton hold?Secretary of the Treasury - our expert on the financial situation in America.
What party was Hamilton from?Federalist
What did federalist believe in terms of the federal government? They believed that each state would have to give up a little of its rights for the common good.
What were Hamilton's recommendations in his "Report on Public Credit of 1790"?1.) Pay off the debt to the soldiers plus interest; 2.) pay off the state's debts; 3.) establish a national bank; 4.) tax imports
Why were the federalist against paying the bonds back to the soldiers? Many of the original bond holders had sold their bonds to speculators from the north. They felt that the federalist speculators were getting rich at their expense.
Why were the anti - federalists against paying off the state's debts? Most of the southern states had already paid off their debts in the years since the revolution. A tax on the whole country to pay off the debts of northern (federalist) states didn't seem fair.
Why were the anti-federalist against a national bank? They didn't like the fact that this national bank would be located in the north and be another way for the northern federalists to take advantage of the southern anti-federalists. They didn't want a national bank to make rules that all banks would have to follow and make money off of the south.
Why were the anti-federalist against a tax on imported goods? They felt that this tax would help to protect northern (federalist) manufacturing and drive up prices on southerners. Products that would have been cheaper coming in from Europe were now more expensive since they were being taxed. And when southern farmers tried to sell their food to Europe it got taxed heavily.
The policies Hamilton proposed wre designed to create national unity. But instead they divided people. Why?Hamilton's proposals seemed to favor Northerners over Southerners, speculators over the original bond holders, and the federal government over the states and individuals.
Hamilton favored government by the elite. Why would this make some Americans feel uncomfortable? Some might feel that wealthy, educated leaders would not fairly represent the interests of the common people.
