culture | the traditions and beliefs of a society, it is a learned behavior. You learn how to act, feel, and behave. The do’s and don’ts. Culture is formed through parents, family, media, peers, cultural institutions (education). |
cultural relativism | The strategy to respect the customs, traditions, and beliefs of all cultures. Ideas of ‘normal’ differ from culture to culture to avoid judging members of other cultures and imposing your own cultural standards on them. |
discrimination | unfair treatment of one person or group due to race, ethnicity, age, religion or gender |
ethnocentrism | The belief that your culture is superior [better] than other cultures. It is the tendency of persons to judge other cultures according to their own cultural standards. |
objective | Not influenced by personal feelings, beliefs or culture when one tries to be totally fair. |
perspective | Someone’s point of view. It is how a person or someone sees the world. Based on beliefs and experiences |
stereotype | to classify individuals or groups according to an incorrect image or idea. To assume an individual behaves in a pre-determined way is a stereotype. |
status | what groups (cultural, religious, professional) have high and low class structure in a society? This means the groups who have power and more opportunities have higher status. |
art | The effort to arrange sounds, colors, forms and movement to create beauty. What art and literature are typical for this culture? (ex.- music, paintings, movies) |
history | the record of and the attempt to understand past events. What events shaped the culture? |
economy | the activities performed by humans in order to provide food, clothing and shelter. What drives the economy? (ex.- jobs, buying/selling goods) |
government | the system of laws and controls used to provide order. Who has power? How is the average citizen connected to the government? |
language | the use of vocal sounds or symbols in a recognizable pattern used for communication. As culture changes we expand our vocabulary. |
social group | people who recognize they have something in common with other members of society |
education | The gathering together and passing on of knowledge |
beliefs | faith in a group of ideas |
values | what is respected and whether or not society sees it as a “big deal”. The value is the relative merit or importance in society. |
religion | an explanation of the unexplainable |
