| claim | a writer's position or statement that proves the thesis. Therefore, it is typically at the beginning of each body paragraph in an argumentative essay. |
| statistic | a number fact |
| counterargument | a statement made to oppose another person's opinion and then explain why that opinion is opposed. This makes your own argument stronger. |
| expert opinion | a statement made by someone with experience, education, or authority in a subject area |
| evidence | facts, examples, statistics, expert opinions, and anecdotes which help to prove or support a claim |
| anecdote | a short, descriptive story used to help prove a point |
| thesis | a statement that answers a prompt or questions, and may call for action or attention. It requires claims and evidence to be proven. |
| analysis | an explanation of how the evidence (quotes/paraphrases) relate to the thesis/claim |
