Butt Joint | assembly in which two pieces joined are in the same plane, with the edge of one piece touching the edge of the other |
Corner Joint | a junction formed by the edges of two pieces of metal meeting at an angle (usually a right angle, or 90°) |
Edge Joint | a joint formed when two pieces of metal are lapped with at least one edge of each piece at an edge of the other |
Flange Joint | a joint formed when the edge of one or more pieces of the base metal are bent and form a flange(s) |
Flare-Groove Joint | a joint formed when the flanged edges of one or both pieces of base metal are placed together to form a single-flare-bevel or double-flare-V-groove |
Groove Angle | the total angle formed between the groove face on one piece and the groove face on the other piece |
Groove Face | the surface formed on the edge of the base metal after it has been machined, bent, or flame cut |
Groove Joint | a joint formed when there is a designed space in the form of an angled or shaped groove between the pieces being joined |
Inside Corner Joint | a joint made by welding along the inside of the intersection (usually a 90 degree angle) of two pieces of base metal |
Lap Joint | a joint formed by overlapping the edges of two pieces of base metal |
Outside Corner Joint | a joint made by welding along the outside of the intersection (usually a 90 degree angle) of two pieces of base metal |
T-Joint | a joint formed by two pieces of base metal placed at approximately a 90 degree angle to one another to form a "T" shape |
Weld Joint | the point or line at which two pieces come together and are fastened by welding |
Weld Pass | one weld bead along a welding joint |
