A | B |
Base Material | Nonmetallic material to be welded, cut, cut or brazed |
Crescent-Shaped Motion | A type of pattern used on a weave bead |
Effective Throat | The minimum distance, minus any convexity, from the weld face to the weld root |
Filler Metal/Material | A metal or alloy added to the base metal to replace material that was removed when thicker material is machined or cut to form a groove |
Joint Penetration/Weld Size | The depth that a weld extends into the joint from the surface |
Leg | The shortest distance from the weld toe of a fillet to the point where the pieces of base metal touch |
Root Reinforcement | The distance that the penetration projects from the root side of the joint |
Stringer Bead | A weld bead made by moving a torch or electrode holder along the weld without any side-to-side motion |
Weave Bead | A weld bead formed by moving a torch or electrode holder from side to side as the weld pass progresses along the welding joint |
Weld Axis | An imaginary line running through the center of and parallel to a completed weld |
Weld Bead | The shape of the finished joint when fusion welding is done. A filler metal is usually added during welding to form the weld bead |
Weld Face | The outer surface of a weld on the side from which the weld is made |
Weld Pool | The small molten volume of metal under the torch flame or electrode, prior to its solidification as weld metal. |
Weld Root | The points where the root surface of the weld intersect the base metal. |
Weld Toe | The point where the weld bead contacts the base metal surface |
