Executive Branch: Roles of the President Concentration
|
| A | B |
| Chief of State | This role requires a president to be an inspiring example for the American people. In some nations, the ______ is a king or a queen who wears a crown on special occasions, celebrates national holidays, and stands for the highest values and ideals of the country. As the American ________, the president is a living symbol of the nation. It is considered a great honor for any citizen to shake the president's hand. |
| Chief Executive | The president is the "boss" for millions of government workers in the Executive Branch. He or she decides how the laws of the United States are to be enforced and chooses officials and advisors to help run the Executive Branch. As ______ , the President acts as a manager of the country and sets the big picture plan for what the country will do and how it will act. This is similar to the role of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of a company. Both the President and the CEO of a company try to hire the right people for the right jobs. Instead of managers, the President chooses people to serve in the Cabinet or to head important agencies. The President also decides how the laws of the country will be carried out. |
| Chief Diplomat | As ______, the President is the number one representative of the United States when interacting with other countries. When foreign leaders visit the United States they meet with the President, talk about important issues, and can make important decisions together. The President also decides how the United States will treat other countries and what ambassadors and other diplomats will communicate to other countries. The president decides what American diplomats and ambassadors shall say to foreign governments. With the help of advisors, the president makes the foreign policy of the United States. |
| Commander-In-Chief | The president is in charge of the U.S. Armed Forces: the Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, and Marine Corps (plus, soon to be space corps). The president decides where troops shall be stationed, where ships shall be sent, and how weapons shall be used. While specific decisions about wartime actions are left to generals and other advisors, the President must approve major military actions. The President also regularly meets with members of the military both domestically and abroad and tours military bases. |
| Chief Legislator | Only Congress has the actual power to make laws, but the Constitution gives the president power to influence Congress in its lawmaking. Presidents may urge Congress to pass new laws or veto bills that they do not favor. As _______, the President meets with members of Congress and tries to set the agenda for the legislative branch. The President has no formal legislative power, but is an important person in the legislative process. At the beginning of a new session of Congress the President will meet with Congressional leaders to talk about what they want to get done. The President may also give members of Congress ideas for laws, push for specific laws to be passed, or threaten to veto a law before it is passed. |
| Chief of Party | As _______, the President is the unofficial leader of the political party to which they belong. The President may campaign for a candidate of their party or help them raise money by showing up to one of their events. The goal, though, is for the President to help members of their political party to get elected. On the other hand, if the President is unpopular candidates may not want to be connected to the President. The president campaigns for those members who have supported his or her policies. At the end of a term, the president may campaign for reelection. |
| Chief Citizen | As ____ of the United States, the President represents the people of the country and tries to promote the public interest. The public interest is what’s best for the people of the country rather than what’s best for a private company or a small group of people. The President also serves as an example of what a good American citizen looks like. |
| Guardian of the Economy | In this role, the president is concerned with such things as unemployment, high prices, taxes, business profits, and the general prosperity of the country. The president does not control the economy, but is expected to help it run smoothly. |
