compound sentence | This is made up from two or more simple sentences joined by a coordinating conjunction. These clauses can be joined using ‘and', 'but' or 'so'. For example It was late, but I wasn’t tired. |
complex sentence | This is made up from a simple sentence and one or more dependent or subordinate clauses. for example The man limped because his leg hurt. |

Co-ordinating conjunctions | Co-ordinating conjunctions link two simple sentences to make compound sentences. |
Subordinating conjunctions | Subordinating conjunctions go at the start of a subordinate clause so they work to link the subordinating clause to the main clause. for example when, while, before, after, since, until, if, because, although, that We were hungry when we got home. |
subject | the noun that is 'doing the action' of the sentence. It is usually located to the left of the verb. |
predicate | the verb of the sentence. It shows action or state of being. |

independent clause | A simple sentence - An independent clause can stand by itself as a complete sentence. It expresses a complete thought or idea and contains a subject and a verb |
