| Annealing | A process in which a material is heated, then cooled to strengthen it. |
| Black iron pipe | Carbon steel pipe that gets its black coloring from the carbon in the steel. |
| Bushing | A pipe fitting with male threads on the outside and female threads on the inside. It is most often used to connect the male end of a pipe to a fitting of a larger size. |
| Cap | A female pipe fitting that is closed at one end. It is used to close off the end of a piece of pipe. |
| Chain vise | A device used to clamp pipe and other round metal objects. It has one stationary metal jaw and a chain that fits over the pipe and is clamped to secure the pipe. |
| Chain wrench | An adjustable tool for holding and turning large pipe up to 4” in diameter. A flexible chain replaces the usual wrench jaws. |
| Coupling | A pipe fitting containing female threads on both ends. Couplings are used to join two pipes in a straight run or to join a pipe and fixture. |
| Cross | A pipe fitting with four female openings at right angles to one another. |
| Die | A tool insert used to cut external threads by hand or machine. |
| Elbow | An angled pipe fitting having two openings. It is used to change the direction of a run of pipe. |
| Flange | A flat plate attached to a pipe or fitting and used as a means of attaching pipe, fittings, or valves to the piping system. |
| Galvanized pipe | Carbon steel pipe that has been coated with zinc to prevent rust. |
