Grooved pipe | A piping method for connecting piping systems. The use of grooved piping eliminates the need for threading, flanging, or welding when making connections. Connections are made with gaskets and couplings installed using a wrench and lubricant. |
Inside diameter | The measurement made across the inside width (internal opening) of a pipe. |
Nipple | A short length of pipe that is used to join fittings. It is usually less than 12" long and has male threads on both end |
Nominal size | The approximate dimension(s) by which standard material is identified. |
Outside diameter | The measurement made across the outside width of a pipe, including the wall thickness plus the internal opening. |
Pipe dope | A putty-like pipe joint material used for sealing threaded pipe joints. |
Plug | A pipe fitting with external threads and head that is used for closing the opening in another fitting. |
Reamer | A tool used to remove the burr from the inside of a pipe that has been cut with a pipe cutter. |
Stock | A tool used to hold and turn dies when cutting external threads. |
Strap wrench | A tool for gripping pipe. The strap is made of nylon web. |
Union | A pipe fitting used to join two lengths of pipe. It permits disconnecting the two pieces of pipe without cutting. |
