| cell | In a table, the area where a row and column intersect. |
| demoting | When using the Navigation pane, to format a heading with a subordinate level heading style; for example, to change text from the Heading 1 style to the Heading 2 style. |
| dot leader | A row of dots (or other characters) between tabbed text. |
| endnote | Explanatory comment or reference that appears at the end of a section or document, but that is linked to a superscript reference number in the main text. |
| footer | Text, date, or other information that is printed below the bottom page margin; also, the blank area at the bottom of a page where such information can be inserted. |
| footnote | Explanatory comment or reference that appears at the bottom of a page, but that is linked to a superscript reference number in the main text. |
| gridlines | Nonprinting lines that reveal the underlying structure of a table. |
| Header and Footer view | A Word view in which a document’s header and footer areas are available for editing, and the main document is unavailable for editing. |
| header | Text, date, or other information that is printed above the top page margin; also, the blank area at the top of a page where such information can be inserted. |
| header row | The top row of a table, containing the headings that identify the type of information in each column. |
| promoting | When using the Navigation pane, to format a subordinate heading with a higher level heading style; for example, to change text from the Heading 2 style to the Heading 1 style. |
| Read Mode | A document view designed to make reading a Word document on a screen as easy as possible. |
| record | A complete set of information in a table; typically, each row in a table is a separate record. |
| reference marker | Small, superscript number in the main text that is linked to a footnote or endnote. |
| section | A part of a document that can have its own page orientation, margins, headers, footers, and so on, separate from the rest of the document. |
| section break | A nonprinting divider that separates a document into sections. |
| SmartArt | A diagram consisting of text and shapes, such as circles, squares, or arrows, created with the SmartArt button in the Illustrations group on the INSERT tab. |
| sort | To rearrange information in alphabetical, numerical, or chronological order. |
| subheading | A heading that is subordinate to a higher level heading. |
| subordinate | Term used to refer to a heading that is logically grouped under another, higher level heading; in the Navigation pane, subordinate headings are indented below higher level headings. |
| superscript | Term used to describe text or a number that is raised slightly above the line of text. |
| tab stop | A location on the horizontal ruler where the insertion point moves when you press the Tab key. |
| table | Information arranged in a grid made up of horizontal rows and vertical columns. |
