A | B |
清明節 / 清明节 | Jie Zitui left a letter for Duke Wen of Jin, asking him to be an honest (清qīng) and enlightened (明 míng) ruler to his people. China’s Qingming festival honors the integrity and selflessness of this man, and by extension, the beneficence of all who lived before us. |
寒食節/寒食节 | The Cold Food Festival, now absorbed into the Qingming Festival, was driven by the deep regret that Duke Wen of Jing suffered at having set the fire that killed his benefactor. As a result, his people would not even light a fire to cook their food. |
柳樹/柳树, 柳條/柳条 | The willow tree and the willow sprig memorialize those who are no longer with us. |
掃墓/扫墓 | Sweeping the tomb, and laying out offerings such as food and incense, is an expression of our caring for those who once cared for us. |
忠心 | Deep loyalty, such as to the ruler, includes the willingness to sacrifice one’s very flesh (and life) if necessary. |
回報/回报 | The repayment of debts, both material and spiritual, is a cardinal virtue in Chinese culture. This is why Duke Wen of Jing was so desperate for Jie Zitui to accept a demonstration of his gratitude. |
介子推 | As the legend of his loyalty and disdain of material reward grew, he came to be regarded as a Daoist immortal—a recluse living so close to nature that he learns its secrets—and temples were built in his honor. |
清明节气 | Approximately 15 days in spring, as determined by the Chinese Solar Terms. The first day of this period is the Qingming Festival, also called the Tomb Sweeping Festival. |
