| Gabriel Prosser | A literate slave who planned a large rebellion in Richmond in 1800. Information on his plan was also leaked and he was arrested along with 25 followers, and all were hanged in punishment. In response, Virginia placed laws on free slaves and prohibited their education to avoid similar rebellions. |
