Word Processing Vocabulary

This is one section of words that you will need to know the meaning of. There are several sections each including only 15-20 words.

tabkey used to indent text in a line; can also be used to set-up columns in a document
thesaurusa tool that helps you find words with similar meanings
titlebarthe gray part of a window that holds the name of your window or document; you can also move the window by clicking and holding here
word processinga computerized method of writing, editing, saving, and printing text
resize buttonused to change the shape of your window--located in the lower right corner of a window
desktoparea where you do your work
finder windowdisplays your path when you are in column view
icon list columnthe 3 views of a finder window
arrow keysused in place of the mouse to move the cursor to a new location
backspacekey which removes the text to the left of the cursor position
cap lock keykey that causes all letters keyed to be capital letters
computermachine that performs four functions; input, processing, storage, and output
deleteto remove or erase
double spacewhen keying text, the act of spacing text two lines apart
enter or return keykey on keyboard that is used to enter information into a computer or to return the cursor to the beginning of a new line
insertto add new text into already existing text without deleting previously keyed text
keyboardan input device consisting of a standardized layout of buttons or keys with symbols, such as letters or numbers that can be entered into a computer by pressing on the keys
ergonomicsthe position of the body or of parts of the body at the keyboard
shift keyon the keyboard, a key that is used to capitalize letters when pressed with that letter key
soft copyoutput from a computer that you can see or hear, but not touch (ex: Output from a monitor or speaker)
softwareinstructions on a CD that makes the computer work; It tells the CPU what to do. (CPU=Central Processing Unit)
textanother name for alphabetical data that was entered
word wrapletting the computer decide where to end each line (typing text without pushing return/enter at the end of each line.)
