Forces & Motion

Vocab to know for test!

AB
ForceA push or pull
Balanced Forcesequal and opposite forces. Sum of the forces is zero (net force zero). Object will not move.
Unbalanced ForcesUnequal forces. Sum of the forces (net force) is greater than zero. Object will move.
GravityA force of attraction between two objects based on their masses. It is a non-contact force.
FrictionA force that resists motion. Happens when one object rubs against another. It is a contact force.
DragFrictional force of air. This is a contact force.
MagnitudeStrength of a force
VectorA quantity that has magnitude and direction. Shown as an arrow.
NewtonThe unit of force
Net ForceThe combination (sum) of all forces acting on an object
Gravity increasesWhen object is more massive and/or object is closer
Weight changeswhen gravity changes
To find net force of opposite forcessubtract the forces
To find the net force of forces in the same directionadd the forces
Net force should havea number, an arrow and a N unit
Contact Forcea push or pull on one object by another that is touching it (examples: friction, push, pull, drag)
Non-Contact Forcea force that one object can apply to another object without touching it (examples: gravity, magnetic force, electric force)
ClaimA statement that answers a scientific question
EvidenceObservations and/or data that support a scientific claim
ReasoningA scientific explanation of how or why your data (evidence) supports your claim (statement)
Kinetic EnergyEnergy of motion
