Creating DocumentsThe process of creating new files and documents.
Create a new ProjectCreating a new document in Illustrator to be used for graphic design.
Document PresetsPredetermined settings (dimensions, color mode, units of measurement) used to create new documents.
Custom DocumentRequire the user to establish settings (dimensions, color mode, units of measurement) used to create new documents.
Units of measurePixels, Picas, Points, Inches, Centimeters, Millimeters.
Non-Printing ElementsTools in Illustrator that assist the user in measuring and aligning objects on the page. Tools include rulers, grids, and guides.
RulersAllows the user to create guides based off of document dimensions.
GuidesCan be created from objects or from rules. Used for alignment and snapping.
Smart GuidesTemporary snap to guides that aid in alignment and distribution of objects on an artboard.
GridsCreates a proportional grid of squares that can be adjusted and used for alignment.
BleedThe area outside of the printing boundaries.
EmbeddingPermanently placing an asset into a project. If the project moves, the asset moves as well.
LinkingPlacing an asset into a project where the asset is not permanent. If the project moves the asset will not stay with the file. If the original asset is updated the asset is updated in the project as well.
ReplacingSwapping an asset in a project with a different asset.
Copying and pastingCopy an asset from an external source into a project.
ColorThe element of art that is produced when light strikes a specific object. Consists of three aspects: hue, saturation, and brightness.
Color ModelsAdditive color is used for screens and subtractive color is used for printing.
RGBRed, Green, Blue color model is used for screens.
CMYKCyan, Magenta, Yellow, & Black color model used for printing.
HSBHue, Saturation, and Brightness color model.
LABMore accurate color model that measures color as well as brightness.
GrayscaleMonochromatic shades of grey from white to black.
Color SpacesA specific organization of colors.
Color GamutsRange of colors within a color model.
Spot ColorsUses a unique code to create a specific color.
Process colorsUses CMYK to produce colors.
SwatchesPredefined, easy to access colors.
Global SwatchesColors that are automatically updated within a project.
GradientsA gradual change of color in an object. Can be two colors or multiple colors.
Color GuidesAllows the user to select colors that work well together such as complementary colors, contrasting colors, analogous colors, & monochromatic colors.
Color LibrariesPreselected sets of colors such as PANTONE, Nature, Metal, Food.
LayersThe ability to separate components of a design into separate, selectable, sections.
Layer OptionsCan change the name of layers as well as the layer color.
Layer colorAffects the highlight color of selected items on an artboard.
Stacking OrderThe order of the layers directly affects the appearance of the design. Layers at the top of the stack hide layers beneath them.
Clipping MasksHiding parts of an artboard within the boundaries of other paths.
Opacity MasksA combination of clipping masks and gradients that creates a gradual change in the opacity of an object.
SublayersEach layer can contain sublayers for separate paths and shapes. Every new shape or path creates a new sublayer.
Merging & Grouping LayersPlacing graphics from multiple layers into a single layer using the Layers panel functions.
FillThe inside color of a closed shape.
StrokeThe outline of a shape, text or image.
