| Facing Pages | Two pages shown side-by-side used for book style publications that will be bound. |
| Spreads | Any two facing pages in a publication. |
| Gutter | Space between columns in a publication. Sometimes referred to as an “Alley”. |
| Margins | Space between the edge of the page and the content. |
| Bleed | Extra space beyond your page that allows you to run objects beyond the edge of the page to ensure that they print to the edge of the page to prevent a white border when cutting. |
| Slug | Extra space beyond your page used to show markings or provide notes for the printer. |
| Pasteboard | The area that extends beyond the edge of the document where you can store objects not currently used in the publication. |
| Workspace | The arrangement of the InDesign window, to include panels and tools, to achieve a specific purpose. |
| Menus | Lists for related commands in a software program. |
| Control Panel | A context sensitive panel, typically located under the menus, that provides context sensitive options for the selected tool or object. |
| Status Bar | A bar in the lower left corner of the document window that shows information about the status of a file and allows for page navigation. |
| Master Pages | Non-printing pages that allow you to pace text and graphic elements that will appear on all pages of a publication. |
| Frames | Objects that serve as containers or placeholders in InDesign for text, graphics, and other design elements. |
| Threading | The process of connecting text frames so that text will flow from one frame to another. |
| Placeholder Text | Text that temporarily takes the place of the final text that helps the designer to plan out where content will be located and how it will be formatted when completed. |
