Symbolism | when a person, place, or thing stands for an idea. Example dove = peace |
Motif | a recurring image, idea, or symbol that develops or explains a theme (love, forgiveness, acceptance) |
Foreshadowing | clues that give a hint to later events in a story |
Theme | the moral or lesson learned (forgiveness is the key to love and happiness) |
Cliffhanger | when a chapter or paragraph ends in a suspenseful event, making the reader want to continue to read on |
Flashback | when action is suspended in a story to go back to an earlier time |
Irony | the opposite of what one thinks would happen actually happens |
Mood | emotion created in the READER while reading the story |
