AlignmentArranging design components in an organized and visually appealing manner.
Aspect RatioThe ratio of the width of the height of a design composition.
BalanceThe way in which visual elements are positioned in a design.
ColorThe element of art that is produced when light strikes a specific object. Consists of three aspects: hue, saturation, and brightness.
Depth of FieldThe range of “acceptable sharpness” in front of the camera within which objects appear in focus to the human eye; objects closer to the camera or beyond the far end of that range will appear blurry and out of focus.
EmphasisThe component of a design that first attracts attention.
Field of ViewThe amount of the observable world that is observable in that moment.
Gestalt PrincipleHow humans perceive grouped objects and patterns. Used to create aesthetically pleasing and easy to understand designs.
KerningThis is the adjustment of the space between two individual letters.
LeadingThis is the adjustment of the space between lines of text.
LinesA point that moves throughout a design.
MovementThe appearance of movement. Created by rhythm.
ProximityHow close objects, shapes, images, or text is to other elements in a design.
RepetitionRepeating elements in a design to create contrast, interest, or movement.
RhythmThe suggestion of movement within a design.
Rule of ThirdsDividing a photograph or video into a tic-tac-toe board. The subject takes up one third of the screen with eyes usually on the bottom third or top third line.
Rules of CompositionEstablished rules for setting up a photograph so that it is visually appealing.
ScaleThe size of objects in a design. Can be used to create emphasis or contrast.
ShapesAreas of colors defined by lines.
Text AlignmentFormatting the appearance of text with the margins of the text box.
TextureThe illusion of a three dimensional physical surface (tactile) created by shapes, lines, and shadows.
TrackingThis is the adjustment of the overall spacing between letters.
Unity/HarmonyCreating a pleasing design by following the principles of design. Everything belongs.
VarietyHaving different colors, shapes, lines, fonts, etc. etc. in a design.
Visual HierarchyThe design process of directing the viewer where to look and what order to look at a design in.
White BalanceThe balancing of the color white on a camera that ensure all other colors are correct.
White SpaceThe absence of text or graphics in a design; visual breathing room for the eye; helps avoid overcrowding and creates natural flow.
