| 3 Components of Clay | Silica, Alumina, Water |
| Subtractive Sculpture | Sculpture made by taking away clay, slowly creating the desired form. |
| Additive Sculpture | Sculpture made by adding, combining or building up materials. |
| Wedging | Kneading clay to get out air bubbles (in ceramics, air bubbles are not our friends), make the clay more plastic and remove moisture. |
| Joining | The process of attaching two pieces of clay together. Usually completed by slipping and scoring. |
| Scoring | Roughing up, or scratching, 2 pieces of clay to prepare it to be slipped and joined together. |
| Slip | A soupy mixture of clay and water that servers as a glue for clay. |
| Pinch | Beginning with a ball of clay and using two fingers to expand the walls outwards to create a vessel type shape. |
| Coil | Building up with walls with rope-like coils of clay. |
| Slab | The method of building clay objects by rolling, cutting and building with flat pieces (slabs) of clay. |
| Plasticity | Clay’s ability to be pinched, pulled, rolled, squeezed and yet it will retain it’s shape. |
| Grog | Ground-up pieces of fired clay (sometimes even sand) added to clay for additional strength, improved drying and less shrinking. |
| Underglaze | (colored slip) Colors painted on clay usually under a transparent glaze. These colorants are not glazes and will not make a pot waterproof. |
| 3 Ingredients of glaze | Silica, Flux and a refractory element. |
| Glaze | A glassy coating that can be fused to the surface. |
| During firing, the particles of clay __________ | fuse together. |
| During firing, the particles of water__________ | evaporate. |
| Porous | Space between particles of clay that will soak up moisture. |
| Sgraffito | Scratching a design into clay or through underglaze (colored slip) prior to bisque firing. |
| Kiln | An oven used for firing clay. |
| Lip | The upper part of a vessel |
| Base | The bottom part of a vessel |
| Motif | A theme expressed through symbol or pattern |
