Triangle Shirtwaist Fire | Disaster at the TSF company which led to the death of 146 women. The owner kept the doors locked to keep the women working, and they could not get out when the fire started. This led to new saftey laws |
AFL | American Federation of Labor. A union that accepted only skilled workers. Set up many unions according to a particular craft |
Knights of Labor | this union accepted all workers into one big union |
Bessmer Process | invented by Henry Bessemer. A quick way to turn raw iron into steel. Revolutionized the steel industry |
Terence V. Powderly | immigrant and railroad worker who took over the Knights of Labor and made it into a strong union |
Samuel Gompers | founded the AFL and made it into a strong labor force |
Eugene Debs | founded the American Railway Union which included all railway workers. He supported the Pullman Strike |
Reaper | developed by Cyrus McCormick to harvest crops quickly. Decreased the need for farm laborers and increases production |
J.P. Morgan | a powerful banker who lent money to industry and also bought some steel and railroad companies |
Scab | nonunion replacement worker during a strike, or union workers who refuse to strike and keep working. They angered fellow laborers who were on strike |
