A | B |
Insolation | The angle at which the sun strikes the earth. |
Atmoshpere | The layer of air surrounding the earth |
Troposphere | The layer of the atmosphere closest to the earth. |
Air Pressure | The force of the air pushing down on the earth. At low altitudes it's highest and at high altitudes it's lowest. |
Weather | The conditions of the atmosphere at a given time and place. |
Barometer | It's used to measure air pressure. The two most common types are mercury and anaroid. |
Water Vapor | Water in the air in the form of a gas. |
Humidity | The amount of water vapor in the air. |
Evaporation | The changing of liquid to gas. |
Condensation | The changing of gas to liquid. |
Relative Humidity | A comparison between how much water is actually in the air and how much it could hold at a certain temperature. |
Stratus Cloud | A cloud that forms blanket-like layers. |
Cumulus Cloud | A puffy cloud with a flat bottom. |
Cirrus Cloud | High, wispy, feather-shaped clouds formed from ice crystals. |
Fog | A cloud at groud level. |
Precipitation | Any form of water particles that falls from the atmoshere and reaches the ground. |
Water Cycle | The complex system of changes water experiences in the atmosphere. |
Wind | Air that moves horizontally. |
Convection Cell | The part of the atmosphere wher ari moves in a circuluar pattern because of unequal heating and cooling. |
Sea Breeze | Wind that blows from the sea toward the land. |
Land Breeze | Wind that blows from the land toward the water. |
Coriolis Effect | The effect that makes the wind curve to the right in the northern hemisphere and to the left in the southern hemisphere. |
Isobar | A line on the map connecting areas of equal air pressure. |
Weather Vane | An instrument used to tell wind direction. |
Anemometer | An instrument used to measure wind speed. |
Beaufort Scale | Measures wind speed from 0-12. |
Updraft | When air rises (goes up). |
Downdraft | When air sinks (goes down). |
