The Cell In Action

These terms will help you understand Sections 1 of Chapter 4-"The Cell in Action"(pgs.84-87) where you will be learning about how cells interact with their environment.

AB
diffusion (84)the movement of particles (molecules) from an area where they are MORE CONCENTRATED to an area where they are LESS CONCENTRATED, until they are EVENLY (equally) DISTRIBUTED(spread out). DOES NOT REQUIRE ENERGY
osmosis (85)a special term for the DIFFUSION of only WATER with nothing else dissolved in it. NO ENERGY REQUIRED
plasmolysis (H.O."The Cell Membrane & Its Interactions w/the Environment")when too much WATER diffuses OUT OF THE CELL,causing the cytoplasm to shrink and the cell membrane to start to collapse. NO ENERGY REQUIRED
passive transport (86)the movement of small particles through protein "doorways" (TRANSPORT PROTEINS) located in the cell membrane-movement is from HIGH to LOW and DOES NOT REQUIRE ENERGY.
active transport (86)the movement of particles through protein "doorways" against the normal direction of diffusion- in other words from LOW to HIGH concentration- this DOES REQUIRE ENERGY( in the form of ATP!)
endocytosis (87)the process of moving LARGE particles into the cell-DOES REQUIRE ENERGY. The cell membrane surrounds the large particle and encloses it in a "VESICLE".
exocytosis (87)the process of REMOVING large particles from the cell-DOES REQUIRE ENERGY. VESICLES that were formed at the ER (or Golgi complex) carry the particle to the membrane and FUSE with it... the particle is then released into the environment.
concentration (84)the relative amount of a substance in a given amount of space.
