| A | B |
| homogeneous mixture | the parts of this mixture are evenly distributed. |
| heterogeneous mixture | The parts of this mixture are not evenly distributed. |
| saturated solution | when a solution has dissolved all of the solute that can be dissolved |
| solution | formed when one substance is dissolved in another substance |
| solute | this is the substance that is being dissolved in the solution |
| solvent | the substance in which the solute is dissolved |
| evaporation | when a substance changes from a liquid to a gas |
| insoluble | this will not dissolve in the solvent |
| concentrated solution | contains a large amount of solute compared to the amount of solvent. A strong solution |
| diluted solution | has a small amount of solute compared to the amount of solvent. A weak solution |
| unsaturated solution | a solution in which there is more solute that can be dissolved |
| physical change | occurs when the appearance of a substance changes, but chemically the substance is the same |
| sublimation | when a substance changes from a solid directly to a gas |
| chemical change | when the substances produced during this reaction are different from the original substances |
| matter | everything in the world around you; anything that has mass and takes up space |
| mass | the amount of matter in an object |
| soluble | something that is able to be dissolved |
| alloy | a mixture of two or more metals |
| physical property | a property that can be observed without changing the identity of a substance. Most physical properties can be observed with the senses. (color, texture, odor) |
| Physical change vs chemical change | You will be given a description and you will have to decide if the change is physical or chemical. Remember that a physical change is a change in the size, shape, or state of matter. A chemical change will chemically alter the substance. A new substance will be created with different properties from the original substance. You will not be able to get the original substances back. Some words to help you are: PHYSICAL - break, cut, melt, freeze, boil CHEMICAL - bake, burn, cook, fry |
