| CAB (Civil Aeronautic Board) | A former governmental agency that regulated airlines as a public utility. They decided which route an airline would fly and how much it could charge. The agency was disbanded in 1978 with the Deregulation Act. |
| DOT (Dept. of Transportation) | A federal agency that regulates all transportation including airlines. They protect the air traveler and monitor unfair practices. |
| FAA (Federal Aviation Admin.) | A dept. of DOT responsible for passenger safety. They license pilots, certify aircraft, monitor maintenance and govern air traffic control. |
| NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board) | The organization that investigates all aviation accidents, tracks aviation fatalities and publishes safety statistics. |
| ARC (Airline Reporting Corporation) | Owned jointly by the airlines, this organization accredits travel agencies, sets standards, supplies documents and provides a centralized system for processing airline tickets. A travel agency cannot write airline tickets until it is approved by them. |
| IATA (International Air Transport Association) | An association of international airlines whose aim is to create order and stability in international aviation. In 1979, the U.S. govt. ruled that they could no longer regulate U.S. Agencies. |
| IATAN (International Air Travel Agent Network) | Subsidiary of the international association, acts as a service organizaion between U.S. travel agencies and international airlines. Seeks to maintain professionalism. The ID card is a photo identification used by the industry for reduced rate travel. |
