Tech Prep Biz Law CH 1 - Law and Justice
This chapter will introduce you to the concepts of law, justice, and ethics. Types of U.S. law including the four sources of law, criminal vs. civil law, and procedural vs. substantive law will be reviewed. Finally, we will go over the three levels of federal courts; we'll identify the various types of state and local courts; and you will understand how jurisdiction differs between federal and state courts.

| jurisdiction | The power to hear and decide cases. |

| court of record | A court in which an exact account of what went on in a trial is kept so as to allow appeals. |
| business law | Laws that regulate the establishment, operation, and termination of commercial enterprises. |
| laws | Rules of conduct that a political authority will enforce. |
| civil law | A group of laws within the common law that deal with the wrongs against individual persons. |
| common law | Laws based on the customs of the people. |
| ethics | Rules determining what is right or wrong in a reasoned, impartial manner. |
| constitution | A document that sets forth the framework of a government and its relationship to the people it governs. |
| case law | Law created by the judicial branch of government. |
