What goes on in your digestive canal?

An activity to get students in the class reading, recalling and remembering the processes in digestion.
Play a new game after you're done to get a new list for comparison.

Digestion isbreaking food down into simpler substances.
Digestive enzymes arechemicals that help digest food.
Why must food be digested? Some food are insoluble (cannot be dissolved) and are mode up of very large partcles.
Insoluble food and food made up of large particlescannot be absorbed into the blood. Therefore food must be broken down into simpler substances before it can be used.
In the 10-meter long muscular tube called the digestive canalfood is digested step by step into simpler and smaller substances
The digestive canal consists of themouth, gullet, stomach, small intestine, large intestine and anus.
In the mouth, your teethcut food into smaller pieces.
In your mouth, saliva mixes with thefood to make it soft.
The enzyme in the salivastarts to digest food into simpler substances
The tonguerolls the partly digested food into small balls which are swallowed into your gullet.
In the gullet, no digestion takes place and the gulletpushes the balls of food down to your stomach.
When the food reaches the stomach, it mixes food withacids and enzymes.
The stomach squeezes the food andmoves the food round and round.
In the stomach the food continues to be digestedto become simpler substances and the partly digested food almost becomes a liquid.
The liquid food in the stomach flows into thesmall intestine a little at a time.
In the small intestine, different enzymes are present. Most of the remaining food that is not digested will be digested here.
In the small intestine, the small particles can nowabsorbed into the blood. Some vitamins and minerals are also absorbed into the blood.
Food that is not digested or not absorbed moves onto the large intestine.
In the large intestine, most of the water and minerals are absorbed from the undigested food.
The undigested food becomes asemi-solid waste called faeces.
Faeces is stored at thelower part of the large intestine.
The anus is anopening through which faeces is passed out of the body.
