These are the words that you need to know to be able to speak the language of algebra.

discreteA math situation that involves counting and is graphed by dots.
continuousA math situation that requires measurement and is graphed as an interval..
whole numbersThe counting numbers plus the number zero.
integersThe whole numbers and their opposites.
real numbersAll numbers that can be represented as finite and infinate decimals.
patternA general idea for which there are many examples.
instanceAn example of a pattern.
counterexampleAn instance that shows that a pattern is not true.
hypotenuseThe longest side of a right triangle
legsThe sides of the right angle in a right triangle.
modelA general pattern that includes many of the uses of the operation.
multiplicative identityThe number one.
reciprocalThe number that gives a product of one when multiplied by a given number.
algebraic fractionsFractions that have variables in the numerator or the denominator.
oppositesTwo numbers whose sum is zero.
elegantA procedure that is both clever and simple.
permutationAn arrangement of letters, names, or objcts.
intersectionThe set of elements that are in more than one of the identified sets.
unionThe set of elements that is in either or both of the identified sets.
