Chapter 1 -The Science of Chemistry

AB
AllotropeOne of a number of molecular or different forms of an element. Different form of the same element
AtomThe basic unit of matter
AcidA class of compounds that taste sour when dissolved in water, turn blue litmus paper red, and react with bases to form salts
BaseA class of compounds that tastes bitter, feel slippery in water solutions (think bleach), turn red litmus to blue, and react with acids to form salts
ChemicalAny substance with a definite composition (ammonia, water, carbon dioxide)
Chemical ReactionThe process by which elements or compounds interact with one another to form new substances (sugar/sulfuric acid demo)
Chemical changeA change that produces one or more new substances ( oxygen combining with hydrogen to make water)
Chemical PropertyA property (characteristic) of matter that can only be observed when substances interact with one another during a chemical change
CompoundThe result of two or more different elements are chemically combined
DensityA ratio of mass to volume
Endothermic reactionA reaction (change) in which energy is absorbed
Exothermic ReactionA reaction in which energy is released
ElementOne of about 111 simpler substances from which more complex materials can be made
Heterogenous mixtureA mixture containing substances that are not uniformly distributed
Homogeneous mixtureA mixture containing substances that are uniformly distributed
inorganic compoundAll compounds that do not belong to the organic family of compounds
IonAn atom or group of atoms with an electrical charge
MassThe quantity of matter in an object
MatterAnything that has mass and volume
MixtureA collection of two or more substances physically mixed.
MoleculeA neutral group of atoms held together by chemical bonds (sharing electrons)
Organic compoundAny molecular (covalently bonded compound) containing carbon, except carbonates and oxides (carbon dioxice, sodium carbonate)
ProductA chemical produced as a result of a chemical reaction
Physical changeA change that affects only physical properties, it does not alter the chemical make up of the material
Physical propertyAny property of matter that can be measured without changine its chemical nature
pHUsed to determine wether a substance is an acid or a base
QuantitySomething that has magnitude or size
ReactantA chemical that is present at the beginning of a chemical reaction and that takes part in the reaction
UnitA standard used when measuring a quantity. In chemistry we use SI units
VolumeThe amount of space occupied by an object (remember the cubic meter demo)
WeightA forced produced by the action of gravity acting on a mass
Conversion factorA mathematical expression that relates two units ( 12 in/i ft)
