Cell Biology

AB
Plasma MembraneArea that surrounds the cell.
CytosolClear viscous liquid that surrounds organelles.
OrganellesStructures within cells specialized for certain activities.
InclusionsMaterial that is stored within cells.
Permeable MembraneMembrane which allows substances to pass through.
Semi-Permeable MembraneMembrane which allows some substances to pass through...not others; not necessarily alive.
Fluid Mosaic Model of Membrane StructureBilayer of phospholipids with embedded proteins floating in or out it.
Cell MembraneEstablishes a boundary between the cell and the surroundings. Functions: Protection & Facilitates Contact Outside the Cell.
Active TransportRequires use of cell energy, fuel, ATP, & Enzymes & cell is ACTIVE participant.
Passive TransportRequires NO cellular energy & cell is PASSIVE.
Isotonic Solution0.85%-0.9% solution, cell will not be affected
Hypotonicless than 0.85%-0.9%, too little solute, cell will burst. In the case of red blood cells this is called hemolysis (laking.
Hypertonictoo much solute (more than 0.85%-0.9%) cell will shrivel (crenation)
Purpose of Microvillito increase the surface area which facilitates transport processes.
CytosolA clear viscous liquid, located between plasma membrane and nucleas. Composed of mostly water dissolved inorganic substances, and colloidal organic substances. Functions as a background matrix, supports organelles, medium for chemical reactions, assists waste removal and export of secretory products.
RibosomeThe "Dad" of the cell responsible for protein synthesis.
Endoplasmic ReticulumThe "Sidewalk" or "Shed" of the cell, responsible for transport, temporary storage, and some synthesis. Two types: rough & smooth.
Golgi ComplexKnown as the "Mailman" of the cell, resonsible for processing and packaging for exocytosis/secretion and glycoprotein formation.
MitochondriaThe ATP "Power Plant" of the cell, it is more numerous in more metabolically active cells, and more numerous in certain portions of cells.
LysosomesThe "Maid" or "Garbage Man" of the cell, complete with decompostion enzymes. A.K.A. "suicide packets"
PeroxisomesThe "cleaning fluid" used by the "Maid", contains catalase-an enzyme that breaks down Hydrogen Peroxide and other molecules associated with free radicals.
Microfilaments & MicrotubulesThe "Motor Home Structure" or a cytoskelton, used for support and transport. It's suggested as an intracellular nervous system.
Centrioles/CentrosomeThe "Mom" of the cell, its functions include cell division & as an organizing center.
FlagellaThe "Wheels" of the "Motor Home", responsible for movement of the cell.
CiliaThe "Movers" of the cell responsible for movement of material past the cell.
CytoplasmThe "Air" inside the "Motor Home".
Cell InclusionsVariably-shaped "blobs" of material inside cells, such as: fat, mucus, hemoglobin, glycogen, & melanin.
