| lateral | pertaining to the side |
| medial | toward or near the midline |
| anatomical position | a body posture with the body erect, face forward, arms at side |
| anterior | front of body |
| posterior | toward the back |
| proximal | closer to the midline |
| distal | farther from the midline |
| superficial | means situated near the surface |
| peripheral | similiar to superficial, also means outward or near the surface |
| deep | used to describe parts that are more internal |
