| A | B |
| Tibia | Larger of the two lower leg bones; located on the medial side. |
| Skull | Composed of the cranium and facial bones. |
| Hyoid bone | Bone that is located in the neck between the lower jaw and the larynx. |
| Endochondral bone | Bone that begins as hyaline cartilage that is subsequently replaced by bone tissue. |
| Intramembranous bone | Bone that develops from layers of membranous connective tissue. |
| Spongy bone | Bone that consists of bars and plates separated by irregular spaces; cancellous bone. |
| Axial skeleton | The portion of the skeleton that supports and protects the organs of the head, neck, and trunk. |
| Mandible | A movable bone held to the cranium by ligaments. |
| Vertebrae | Bony parts that make up the vertical axis of the skeleton. |
| Vertebral column | Extends from the skull to the pelvis and forms the vertical axis of the skeleton. |
| Sacrum | A triangular structure, composed of five fused vertebrae, that forms the base of the vertebral column. |
| Coccyx | The lowest part of the vertebral column and is usually composed of four fused vertebrae. |
| Sternum | Located along the midline in the anterior portion of the thoracic cage; flat, elongated bone that develops in three parts. |
| Clavicle | Slender, rodlike bones located at the base of the neck and run horizontally between the manubrium and the scalpulae. |
| Scalpulae | Broad, somewhat triangular bones located on either side of the upper back. |
| Humerus | A heavy bone that extends from the scalpulae to the elbow. |
| Radius | Bone that extends from the elbow to the wrist. |
| Femur | Longest bone in the body and extends from the hip to the knee. |
| Ribs | There are twelve pairs of these in the thoracic cage. |
| Appendicular skeleton | Consists of the bones of the limbs and the bones that anchor the limbs to the axial skeleton. |
| Frontal bone | Forms the anterior portion of the skull above the eyes. |
| Parietal bones | Located on each side of the skull, just behind the frontal bone. |
| Occipital bone | Joins the parietal bones along the lambdoidal suture; forms the back of the skull and the base of the cranium. |
| Temporal bones | Located on each side of the skull and joins the parietal bone along the squamosal suture. |
| Sphenoid bone | Wedged between several other bones in the anterior portion of the cranium. |
| Ethmoid bone | Located in front of the sphenoid bone and contains cribriform plates which form part of the roof of the nasal cavity. |
| Facial skeleton | Consists of thirteen immovable bones and a movable lower jawbone. |
| Carpal bones | Eight small bones in the wrist; firmly joined in two rows of four bones each. |
| Metacarpal bones | There are five of these bones on each hand, one in line with each finger, that form the framework of the palm. |
| Phalanges | The bones of the fingers and toes |
| Tarsal bones | Each ankle contains seven of these bones. |
| Metatarsal bones | The instep consists of five of these elongated bones which articulate with the tarsus. |
