Skeletal System - Bones (Chycota)

Review some of the major bones of the skeleton. High School Level Anatomy & Physiology

AB
TibiaLarger of the two lower leg bones; located on the medial side.
SkullComposed of the cranium and facial bones.
Hyoid boneBone that is located in the neck between the lower jaw and the larynx.
Endochondral boneBone that begins as hyaline cartilage that is subsequently replaced by bone tissue.
Intramembranous boneBone that develops from layers of membranous connective tissue.
Spongy boneBone that consists of bars and plates separated by irregular spaces; cancellous bone.
Axial skeletonThe portion of the skeleton that supports and protects the organs of the head, neck, and trunk.
MandibleA movable bone held to the cranium by ligaments.
VertebraeBony parts that make up the vertical axis of the skeleton.
Vertebral columnExtends from the skull to the pelvis and forms the vertical axis of the skeleton.
SacrumA triangular structure, composed of five fused vertebrae, that forms the base of the vertebral column.
CoccyxThe lowest part of the vertebral column and is usually composed of four fused vertebrae.
SternumLocated along the midline in the anterior portion of the thoracic cage; flat, elongated bone that develops in three parts.
ClavicleSlender, rodlike bones located at the base of the neck and run horizontally between the manubrium and the scalpulae.
ScalpulaeBroad, somewhat triangular bones located on either side of the upper back.
HumerusA heavy bone that extends from the scalpulae to the elbow.
RadiusBone that extends from the elbow to the wrist.
FemurLongest bone in the body and extends from the hip to the knee.
RibsThere are twelve pairs of these in the thoracic cage.
Appendicular skeletonConsists of the bones of the limbs and the bones that anchor the limbs to the axial skeleton.
Frontal boneForms the anterior portion of the skull above the eyes.
Parietal bonesLocated on each side of the skull, just behind the frontal bone.
Occipital boneJoins the parietal bones along the lambdoidal suture; forms the back of the skull and the base of the cranium.
Temporal bonesLocated on each side of the skull and joins the parietal bone along the squamosal suture.
Sphenoid boneWedged between several other bones in the anterior portion of the cranium.
Ethmoid boneLocated in front of the sphenoid bone and contains cribriform plates which form part of the roof of the nasal cavity.
Facial skeletonConsists of thirteen immovable bones and a movable lower jawbone.
Carpal bonesEight small bones in the wrist; firmly joined in two rows of four bones each.
Metacarpal bonesThere are five of these bones on each hand, one in line with each finger, that form the framework of the palm.
PhalangesThe bones of the fingers and toes
Tarsal bonesEach ankle contains seven of these bones.
Metatarsal bonesThe instep consists of five of these elongated bones which articulate with the tarsus.
