| nouns | people, places, things or ideas (cat, boy, girl, park, house) |
| verbs | action words (run, walk, jog, cry) |
| interjections | words that show excitement (Wow!, Hey!) |
| conjunctions | words that combine words, phrases, sentences (and, but, or, nor) |
| adjectives | words that describe nouns (big, small) |
| adverbs | words that describe verbs-usually end in -ly (slowly) |
| prepositions | words that show relationships (of, into, around, behind) |
| pronoun | words that replace a noun (he, she, it, they, them, we, us) |
| subject of a sentence | who or what the sentence is about |
| predicate of a sentence | what the subject is doing |
| proper nouns | specific nouns-must be capitalized (Mrs. Carter, Joe, Oneida Lake) |
| common nouns | ordinary people, places or things-not capitalized (lake, teacher, friend) |
| articles | the, an, a |
| sentence | a complete thought, must have a subject and a predicate |
| declarative sentence | a statement (ends with a .) |
| interrogative sentence | a question (ends with a ?) |
| imperative sentence | a command (ends with a . or a !) |
| exclamatory sentence | a sentence that shows excitement (ends with a !) |
