British Navigation ActsLaws that said the colonies could not buy or sell certain products to foreign countries or use foreign ships for trade.
French and Indian WarA war between the French and the English over Canada, the Ohio River Valley and the fur trade. Indians fought on both sides. This was part of an old world rivalry.
John Locke's Contract TheoryLocke believed that once upon a time people lived in a state of nature with no laws or private property, but then people worked to create property and created govenrments to help protect that property. If governments failed to protect people's property they had the right to overthrow the government.

Committees of CorrespondenceGroups of people who would write letters between the colonies to help solve and work together on problems the colonies were having with the British government.
Sam AdamsA patriot and member of the Sons of Liberty who was upset with the way the British were treating the colonists and fanned the flames of revolution by asking Paul Revere to make an engraving of the Boston Massacre that made it look more premeditated than it really was.
John AdamsA well respected lawyer who represented the accused British officers from the Boston Massacre claiming that they reacted in self defense and confusion.
Townshend ActsAfter cancelling the Stamp Act, Parliament passed these new laws which taxed tea, paint, paper, lead and glass. The money was used to pay the governor's salary.
Writs of AssistanceThese were warrants that allowed British officials to look anywhere for smuggled goods. They could be used to harass and intimidate, as well as search for lawbreakers.
The Boston MassacreOne night a group of soldiers and a crowd confronted each other, confusion occured and a soldier fired and others joined and 5 men were killed. The Sons of Liberty called this the Boston Massacre.
Intolerable ActsThe British response the the Boston Tea Party which included closing Boston Harbor to trade, enforcing Martial Law and limiting town meetings to once a year to elect officials only. British officials accused of crimes would be sent back to England and all judges would be appointed by the King.
Day of Fasting and PrayerThis day was declared to show support from the Virginia House of Burgesses for the people of Boston after the closing of Boston Harbor.
George WashingtonCommander of seven of the militia companies formed during the First Continental Congress.
