Living Things

Chapter 39, Exploring Science

AB
What is biology?the study of living things
What is another name for living things?organisms
What 3 ways do we distinguish animals and plants?Movement, Food, Cell Walls
What is photosynthesis?A process requiring chlorophyll used by plants to change energy in sunlight to glucose and oxygen
How are animal cells and plant cells different?Animal cells do not have a cell wall, only a membrane.
What are invertebrates?Animals without a backbone-97% of animals
What are vertebrates?Animals with backbones
Give some examples of invertebratesjellyfish, insects, earthworms, slugs, beetles, shellfish
Give some examples of vertebrates.mammals, birds, reptiles, frogs, fish
What are the seven characteristics of living things?movement, respiration, sensitivity, feeding, excretion, reproduction, growth
What does a cell membrane do?It surrounds the cell and helps to keep the contents in place
What does a nucleus do?It contains the genes that control inherited characteristics.
What is cytoplasm? The watery fluid between the nucleus and the cell membrane.
What is a cell wall?Something only plant cells have which is made of cellulose and strengthens the cell wall.
What is a vacuole?Used to store substances like food, waste and water.
What is a chloroplast?Contains the green pigment chlorophyll used during photosynthesis.
What is a tissue?A group of similar cells which carry out the same function.
What is an organ?A structure that contains two or more tissues working together.
What is a system?A number of organs working together.
