Chapter 1 Vocabulary

This exercise prepares 7th grade Math Course 2 students for advanced proficiency with terminology pertaining to interpreting data and statistics. (SOLs 7.16, 7.17, and 7.18).

Bar GraphA type of graph used to compare amounts.
Box and Whisker PlotA type of plot which shows the distribution of data in each quartile. That is, in each quarter of the data.
Frequency TableA table which lists items together with the number of tallies or frequency that they occur.
HistogramA special type of bar graph used to show frequency. Information along the horizontal axis is grouped into intervals.
Line GraphA graph that shows how amounts change over time.
Line PlotA type of plot that uses a number line to display data. The letter "X" is used to represent each data item.
Lower QuartileThe median of the lower half of the data in a set.
MeanThe statistical average.
MedianThe middle number in a set of data when the data is arranged from least to greatest.
ModeThe data item that occurs the most in a set of data.
OutlierA data item that is far apart from the rest of the data in a set.
RangeThe difference between the greatest and least data items in a set of data.
Scatter PlotA type of plot in which two sets of data are graphed as points, but the points are not connected.
SpreadsheetA computerized tool used for organizing and analyzing data using cells.
Upper QuartileThe median of the upper half of a set of data.
