| header | in word processing, one or more lines of text that appears at the top of each page of a document. |
| footer | one or more lines of text that appear at the bottom of every page of a document. |
| spell checker | a program that checks the spelling of words in a text document |
| mail merge | A feature supported by many word processors that enables you to generate form letters |
| local area network | LAN, the computers are geographically close together (that is, in the same building). |
| wide area network | WAN, the computers are farther apart and are connected by telephone lines or radio waves. The Internet is a WAN. |
| file server | a computer or device on a network that manages network resources |
| sector | the smallest unit that can be accessed on a disk. |
| Internet | a global network connecting millions of computers |
| World Wide Web | A system of Internet servers that support specially formatted documents |
| media | Objects on which data can be stored. These include hard disks, floppy disks, CD-ROMs, and tapes. |
| baud rate | how fast a modem can transmit and receive data |
| modem | acronym for modulator-demodulator. A modem is a device or program that enables a computer to transmit data over telephone lines. Most modern home computers have built in modems. |
