Portuguese Placement Test
 


The Portuguese language program uses two levels of screening in order to place students in the correct language acquisition course

• A placement test Take the online test through Quia, and then check the placement test results chart on this page to see which course you should begin with at GW.
• An interview with the language instructor (screening), if needed Within the first six days of class, instructors need to identify any student who, despite having taken a placement exam, had previous language instruction outside GW and/or interviewed with a placement advisor, does not have a possibility to succeed in the class. This means that the student lacks a minimal language foundation to be able to progress in the language and that the problem cannot be solved with the help of a tutor. Students without proper placement will be removed from their classes.

Who Needs to Take the Placement Test
• You do not need to take a placement test if you:
o Have taken PORT 2010 - Accelerated Portuguese for Spanish Speakers I in the three previous semesters, or at an university or college other than GW

• You do need to take the placement test if you:
o Never formally studied Portuguese, and do not speak Portuguese at home (please enroll in PORT 2010 - Accelerated Portuguese for Spanish Speakers I)

  FOLLOW THESE FOUR STEPS

Step 1
Determine if you need to take the Portuguese Placement Test
• You do not need to take a placement test if you:
o Have taken PORT 2010 - Accelerated Portuguese for Spanish Speakers I in the three previous semesters, or at an university or college other than GW
• You do need to take the placement test if you:
o Never formally studied Portuguese, and do not speak Portuguese at home (please enroll in PORT 2010 - Accelerated Portuguese for Spanish Speakers I)

STEP 2

To take the Portuguese placement exam, create a free Quia account. To do this:
  • Go to the Quia Web site.
  • Click the link labeled "Create my free account."
  • Fill out the form that appears. Select "Student" as the account type. Record or memorize your username and password.
  • When you are done, press the "Create my account" button. You should now be in your account information page. Type in the class code FGFERK664 at the bottom of the page and press the "Add class" button.
Now you're done! Come back to this page and take the test below.

At the end of your test, your score will be reported to you. Use the following scale to interpret your score:

RAW SCORE >>>>>>> course/readiness
0-13 >>>>>>>>Portuguese 2010
14-27 >>>>>>> Portugeuse 2011

In order to be place accurately, it is important that you work independently without the help of a grammar book, dictionary, or online resources.

Important note: Print out the result from your account page and show it to your professor. After classes begin, you or your teacher may see the necessity for you to move into a different class level. The Department reserves the right to help you do this.

Students who change their score in order to get into a course that is inappropriate for their level will not be permitted to remain in that course and may find themselves closed out of courses that better fit their language level.
