The Constitution was written to create a republican form of government in the United States. The founders knew that only in a constitutional republic can the rights of individuals be protected from the tyranny of a majority.
In a republic the people are governed by the rule of law while in a democracy the people are governed by the will of the majority. Our founders were well aware that a democracy would ultimately lead to tyranny.
