ize: 24pt;">When George Washington was elected President of th united States he was well known and highly respected in all of the 13 coloinies.

Because the potential voters in the  different colonies were unfamiliar with other  possible candidates it would have nearly  impossible for them to choose a candidate from a list of men who were complete strangers.

A significant portion of the delegates who attended the Second Continental Congress were college graduates that were learned learned in the law,

Many of the delegates to the Second Continental Congress had served in their state legislatures as senators, representatives and judges.

The men that attended the Second Continental Congress knew each other  well and knew who amongst them could best be trusted to lead the fledging nation.

When the time had come for the states to choose how the President would be elected they decided to choose a panel of  highly  respected statesmen to choose the President .

The delegates understood that the success or failure of the new nation would depend on  the quality of men that were chosen tp lead the new country,

They craeted what was to be called the Electoral College to insure that only highly respected men of integrity would be chosen to serve as President.

They understood the danger associated with a direct democratic popular election to created  the Electorl College to prevent the large states from completely dominating the election of the President.

John Hancock was the President of the  Continrtal Congress  while Patrick Henry was the Governor of Virginia.. John Turnbull was the Governor of Connecticut and John  Rutlefge was Governo of South Carolina.

Prominent founding fathers such as John Hancock, Samuel Adams and Patrick were among the most highly respected founding fathers and were chosen as Presidential Electors in 1788.

The delegates to the Second Conintinental Congress wanted to insure that future Presidents could be trusted to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution and that allowing the uninformed masses. to elect he President would be a dangerouu  thing to do.
