Today we introduce Chapter 8, "The History of Life on Earth." The students will complete the KWL on page 75 of their Science Notebook workbook. The topic for the KWL is "What do you know about the history of life on Earth? After filling this out, we'll have the students share their thoughts. We'll have them look on page 312 in their textbook so they can complete the writing prompt at the bottom of the page in their workbook, "Write a description of the dinosaur that might have left these tracks. What did it look like? Where was it going? What happened to it? After 10 minutes we'll have students share their stories. Next we will pass out strips of paper and have the students create a "pre-assessment" by having them create a timeline of life on Earth starting with 4.5 billion years ago. STudents will basically list out the types of life and time they existed from 4.5 billion years ago to present day. If time allows we will assign page 76 in their Science Notebook workbook.

Today we will introduce the concept of how Earth is divided into different time periods. The students will be expected to write down five key questions/concepts associated with the video, answer them ahead of time and then check to see if they were correct as the information is presented in the video. The questions are found in the video. Unfortunately the video is too large to be uploaded to the server. The video is a Discovery Channel video "Prehistoric Earth" which can be downloaded from the Unitedstreaming website if you have a password.

Today we begin our "Geologic Timeline" Project. Each student will design a poster that depicts the four major Periods of time in Earth's history; Precambrian Time, Paleozoic Era, Mesozoic Era, and the Cenozoic Era. The students must depict each of these on a 8.5-11 piece of white paper. Each time period poster must have hand drawn pictures or pictures from other sources that depict a major event for Period of time within each of the four Eras. Posters that contain color will receive extra content points. These posters are due Friday, May 7. Below is a copy of the timeline and an example of a poster representing the first time - Precambrian time. We'll show the Unitedstreaming video, "Historical Geology - A Glimpse at Earth's Past."
