El Presente del Subjuntivo

Present Subjunctive review day

It´s essential to know how to form and use subjunctive in order to give recommendations, opinions, express hopes, fears, etc.  This is a super important skill for you to be able to demonstrate on the AP Spanish language and culture exam.  Today´s grammar clinic reviews formation and use of present subjunctive in Spanish.  The following review lessons and practice activities will prepare you for a quiz on present subjunctive on Monday.  Take notes in your Spanish notebook.  All of the activities given below will give you feedback and correct answers if you get them incorrect.  I will use several examples from these lessons and items from the practice activities on Monday's quiz.

1.  FORMATION OF PRESENT SUBJUNCTIVE LESSON/ RESOURCE-
Review formation of present subjunctive regulars and irregulars HERE:

PLEASE BE CAREFUL OF -IR STEM CHANGERS in present subjunctive in the NOSOTROS and VOSOTROS FORMS-  Here is WHY!

e> ie and o> ue Stem Changes with -ir Verbs

All e> ie and o> ue stem-changing -ir verbs follow the same changes as in the present except the nosotros and vosotros, forms, in which the e changes to i and the o changes to u.  This is only for -IR stem change verbs.

3.  (Optional- If you are still having trouble forming the present subjunctive, or just want to make REALLY sure that you have it down- watch this optional video of about 10 minutes)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qu7aFlCmRuU

4.  A sentence CLAUSE is a part of a sentence that has its own subject and verb.

When a sentence has two clauses in Spanish, usually connected by QUE, use SUBJUNCTIVE in the second clause when the first expresses:

Uncertainty
Wish/Want/Will upon someone else
Emotion
Indirect command
Request, recommendation
Doubt, Denial
Ojalá, Order, Opinion

and there is a change in subject between the two clauses.

Ejemplos:

Yo quiero que tú me escuches.  I want you to listen to me.

Ellos necesitan que nosotros hagamos la tarea.  They need for us to do our homework.

Todos esperan que Marta traiga los refrescos. Everyone hopes Marta brings the drinks.

Yo insisto en que Uds. me presten atención. I insist you guys pay attention to me.

La Sra. Theis recomienda que su clase presente el examen de AP en mayo.
Mrs. Theis recommends that her class take the AP test in May.

NOTICE THAT WHILE WE do not HAVE to use the word ¨THAT¨ to connect clauses together in English (we can, but we don´t HAVE to), in Spanish you NEED to put QUE most of the time to connect the clauses.  See the above examples.  Notice how most of them in English do NOT use the word ¨that¨ to connect the clauses but in Spanish, all of my examples use QUE.

5.  NOW, Watch the following review video on USE of subjunctive.  It is excellent. Take NOTES in your Spanish notebook.

6. Here is some PRACTICE of triggers and USE.  Answers are given:

QUIZ over this is on MONDAY during class. Most items will be taken from lessons and practice activities linked today.

Be sure that you know:

-how to form present subjunctive for regular verbs, irregular verbs, and stem changing verbs that end in -IR in the nosotros and vosotros forms, and spelling changes before the letter -e.

-what type of verbs and situations TRIGGER use of subjunctive in the second clause

-when to use the subjunctive vs. when to use the indicative (not subjunctive).

-that the 'triggering' verb (that expresses wish, want, desire, etc.,) is conjugated in regular present tense, NOT subjunctive

-that QUE usually introduces the second clause, even though we don't always use the word 'that' in English

-that we use the infinitive and not subjunctive and a second clause when there's no change in subject.    Espero venir a tu fiesta.  ( I hope to come to your party.)
Not...Espero que venga a...I hope I come to... NO.  No change in subject, no subjunctive.

I expect you to use present subjunctive correctly and frequently in speaking and writing.
Don´t be passive!  This is YOUR AP test and college placement test.
