Course Description:
In this class students will develop their writing, reading, and critical thinking skills in order to become prepared for the real world. The course will begin with a review of the study skills and critical thinking skills that are indispensable to successful learning.
Next, students will engage in a comprehensive study of many genres of literature,including short stories, novels, poetry, drama, legends and myths, non-fiction, and
creative writing. Throughout this comprehensive study, students will learn a new set of vocabulary words each week and will demonstrate their mastery of these words on
weekly vocabulary quizzes. Students will also demonstrate their mastery of the literary concepts and terms on unit tests given at the end of each unit. In addition to the reading units, students will engage in learning the writing process which will provide them with
the skills they will need to pass the writing component of the S.O.L. test and in college to write papers. Many of these papers will critically evaluate the literature selections we will read.
Throughout the year, specific grammar rules will be taught and reinforced through these various writing assignments. Students will also engage in public
speaking and library research skills near the end of the year.

-arrive with homework completed
-answer questions to the best of
their ability
-ask questions when they don’t understand
-treat each other with respect
-accept responsibility for their
own success in learning
Grading Policies:
Breakdown of grades
-Tests are worth 100 points each
-Vocabulary Quizzes are worth 25 points
-Written Papers are worth 100 points each
-Daily Assignments are worth 10 points
(averages will be based on the sum of a student’s actual total points divided by the sum of possible points for that grading period)
