Por vs Para

A. Por is used

1. to express gratitude or apology
Ex Gracias por su ayuda.

2. For multiplication and division (times or divided by)
Dos por dos son cuatro.
Cuatro diviso por dos.

3. for velocity, frequency and proportion
Ex. tres veces días por semana.

4. "through," "along," "by"
Ex. Andamos por el parque.

5. when talking about an exchange, a sale
Él me dio 10 dólares por el libro.

6. to mean "on behalf of," or "in favor of,"
No voté por él.

7. to express a length of time
Yo estudié por dos horas.

8. to express "during" or "at" general times of the day
Se puede ver las estrellas por la noche.

9. for means of communication or transportation
ex. Prefiero viajar por tren y hablar por teléfono.

10. in cases of mistaken identity, or meaning "to be seen as"
Ex: Me tienen por loco. (They take me for crazy.)

11. to express cause or reason
Ex. El hombre murió por falta de agua. (for lack of water)

12. in passive constructions
Ex. El libro fue escrito por Isabel allende. (by)

13. Por" also appears in many idiomatic expressions:

B. Para has relatively fewer uses.

1. to indicate destination
ex. Salimos para Barcelona.

2. to show the use or purpose of a thing
La salami es para la pizza.

3. to mean "in order to" or "for the purpose of"
Para hacer una paella, primero dore las carnes.
To make a paella, first sauté the meats.

4. to indicate a recipient
Este regalo es para ti. (for you.)

5. to express a deadline or specific time
Ex. Necesito el vestido para el viernes. (by Friday)

6. to express a contrast from what is expected
Ex. Para un niño lee muy bien.

7. "estar para" to express an action that will soon be completed
El tren está para salir.
