According the guidelines of good translating and decoding, first identify and translate the subject. Secondly, identify the V1 and V2 verbs and translate them (remember, the default is the simple past in English). Lastly, translate the adverbs, adjectives and prepositional phrases: these will probably be in a "mirror image" / opposite / reverse word order from the German.
