So far, we have seen the ablative being used only in prepositional phrases. Another use of the ablative is to indicate MEANS (how something is done). A word in the ablative that is NOT in a prep. phrase is probably the ablative of means. Translate it with the words "by" or "with".

For example:
Marcus Sextum gladiō necat.
Marcus kills Sextus WITH A SWORD
